'A slaughterhouse for sick and disabled': Reporter tells of hell of accompanying a vulnerable relative through heartless PiP assessments

Ill health forced my relative into early retirement so she was entitled to a small payment from the Government, writes Jane Hamilton in the Daily Record

We knew the day was coming. It had loomed over us from the moment austerity measures were announced.

We knew that one day she’d be called in to explain why she needs help. There was no point trying to explain to my relative what this could possibly mean to her.

She doesn’t understand, anyway.

Despite the stories, we still had some faith the system couldn’t be as heartless, cruel and faceless as we were led to believe.

She’s from a generation who worked hard, paid their taxes faithfully and if they needed help, the Government provided it.

She can barely walk, has a severe lung disease, lives in a world of constant pain. Latterly, death after death after death has left her suffering from severe depression.

yet on it goes more abuse more benefits denial for those who least expect it yes the older we are the more we trust the dwp but my eyes were openned wide dec19 /08 yes many now now how cruel and abusive this government has made its dwp aktion t4 many say nay but look at the figures rtu ids surpassed these figures way past yet out mps have pow wows in the siderooms of the house of ill repute talking about this abuse of power yet they talk more die more get sanctioned while they knock back their whiskeys and cigars while smilling for the cameras yes it good to talk
